Efectos de la fragmentación de hábitats: el papel de las infraestructuras de transporte.

Changes in land use (changes in crop types, deforestation, reforestation, development, public works, etc.) usually involve the increasing fragmentation of the landscape. As a particular type of land use becomes more widespread, the units in regression take the form of fragments which are ever smaller, unconnected and permeable to the aggression of peripheral environments. In this context, the populations of organisms that occupy these fragments tend to decrease in number. This, along with the general deterioration of the fragments and the reduction of the resources necessary to maintain them, can lead to them becoming extinct. Furthermore, if the species involved have a limited capacity for dispersal, the chances of those deserted fragments being recolonised are reduced considerably. Thus the communities of organisms become gradually impoverished. This loss may be irreversible if it brings about the disappearance of those sectors that act as a source of individuals for the species linked to the habitats in regression. For this reason, any strategy for the conservation of diversity of species in fragmented environments must necessarily establish management plans that guarantee, on a suitable geographic scale, the protection of the recolonisation routes of the species affected. Transport infrastructures have always played an important part in fragmentation processes. Traditionally, they have been the routes along which the changes in land use have advanced. It is these changes that are ultimately responsible for the atomization of habitats. On other occasions they are merely roadways which, nevertheless, cut off habitats eliminating their connectivity and causing direct interference amongst the populations of organisms to be found there. Consequently, great care must be taken when planning their routes and improvements designed to reduce their impact.
