Forest management effects on nesting habitat selected by eurasian black vultures (Aegypius monachus) in Central Spain.

They studied two recently established colonies of Eurasian Black Vultures (Aegypius monachus). One was located in an abandoned maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) plantation formerly used for resin production. The other colony was in a Scots pine (P. silvestris) plantation currently used for timber production. Vultures used nest sites with mature trees in forest openings and on steep slopes in the medium-upper mountain sides. These openings had relatively few roads. Differences in tree density, distance to the nearest neighbour's nest, and tolerance to high road density were observed between the nest sites used by the two colonies. Sylvicultural practices in both forests explained differences in nest-site selection between the colonies.

Los autores estudiaron dos colonias de buitre negro (Aegypius monachus) recientemente establecidas. Una se localizaba en una plantación abandonada de pino marítimo (Pinus pinaster) que anteriormente se había explotado para la producción de resinas. La otra colonia estaba situada en una plantación de pino (Pinus silvestris) que actualmente se explotaba para la madera. Los buitres utilizaron emplazamientos para sus nidos en árboles maduros situados en claros dentro del bosque y en laderas abruptas en las partes media-altas de la montaña. Estos claros tenían poca presencia de carreteras. Se observaron diferencias entre los dos emplazamientos utilizados por las colonias en cuanto a la densidad de árboles, la distancia al nido más próximo y en cuanto a su tolerancia con respecto a una elevada densidad de carreteras. Las prácticas silvícolas en ambos bosques explicaron las diferencias en la selección de lugares de nidificación entre las dos colonias.
