The nitrogen cycling in the water of the coastal lagoon of Mar Menor and its relationship with the eutrophication process

In this work, we present additional evidence about the nitrification process that occurs in the Mar Menor and how this process affects the turbidity observed in the lagoon water. From the analysis of the data, using regression and correlation, it is clear that the turbidity observed in its waters has, at least, two different components. The first one would be related to the suspension of nitrogenous materials from the bottom of the lagoon. These compounds are incorporated into the water column in the form of DON / PON, when the salt concentration in the lagoon is lower than 41 g / L. However, as the salt concentration increases, the precipitation of these compounds increases due to a salting out effect, which, in turn, causes a decrease in the turbidity measured by nephelometric technique. However, this change in salinity does not affect to the second component of turbidity, which is the concentration of chlorophyll A in the water column, since it is independent of the salting effect.
