February 4, 2020 - The State Commission for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, a participatory body for biodiversity issues represented by the State Administration and the Autonomous Communities, has proposed including the wolf in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection. This would standardize the species' protection status nationwide and mean it would no longer be considered a game species. Until now, only populations south of the Duero River were included on the list, while those in the north were considered game in some autonomous communities.

February 9, 2021 – The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has today opened the prior public consultation process on the draft Ministerial Order to include all Iberian wolf populations in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection, as adopted on February 4 by the State Commission for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, a participatory body on biodiversity matters in which the general State Administration and the Autonomous Communities are represented.

Ribera asks the regional councilors of Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia, and Castile and León to work together on actions to protect livestock farmers and promote coexistence with the Iberian wolf.

February 15, 2021 – The Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, held a meeting today with the regional ministers of Castile and León, Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria to address the new scenario following the decision to include all Iberian wolf populations in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection, adopted by the State Commission for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity at its meeting on February 4.

Ribera insists that wolf protection guarantees compensation for damage to extensive livestock farming in all territories.

February 23, 2021.- The Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, explained today, during the control session in the Senate, that the inclusion of the wolf in the List of Species under Special Protection Regime implies the involvement of the General State Administration in financing the protection of the Iberian wolf in order to improve its coexistence with human activities that take place in the territories where it lives and prevent livestock farmers from bearing the sole costs of possible damages.

Cabañeros National Park, located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo and co-managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and the Ministry of Sustainable Development of Castilla-La Mancha in collaboration with SEO/Birdlife, has launched three webcams that will broadcast live the breeding season of a colony of lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) and a nest of barn owls (Tyto alba). The LIFE project "Bears with a Future" began its public launch today with the aim of facilitating the adaptation of the Cantabrian bear to climate change.
